Why We Graze Cattle

Hillsdale Cattle Company is located in Hillsdale, Michigan, a rural community known for its people and small-town charm. Our farm is situated on a scenic curve, a view that locals cherish, at the corner of North Hillsdale Road and Ball Road. We are just a short drive north of historic Hillsdale College, across some rolling hills and a river. When you pass by, you can expect to see our 100% grass-fed cattle and sheep grazing peacefully in the lush pastures, just as nature intended.

Hillsdale Cattle Company is a collaborative venture between property owner Stephen McElroy and herd manager Stephen VanDeusen. Their long-standing relationship as Ball Road neighbors/farm family has evolved into a cooperative commitment to improve the soil on the farm. Previously, McElroy produced certified organic field corn and soybeans on the property, while VanDeusen assisted with planting and harvesting. However, it was realized that organic row crops were not a good fit for the farm due to the soil's lack of fertility and the hilly nature of the property. With help from South African Grazier Ian-Mitchell Innes, the two realized they could bring life back to the soil by introducing cattle back to the land.

In 2012, the two decided to partner in cattle farming and purchased seven cow-calf pairs to start their herd. Together, they manage the herd of cattle that rotationally graze across the pastures, moving between different paddocks to allow for regrowth and prevent overgrazing. Since then, the herd has thrived and expanded, and they have also incorporated sheep into their operations.

At Hillsdale Cattle Company, we are committed to enhancing the health of our soil for the benefit of future generations. We never till, spray, or use chemical fertilizers on our pastures. Soil isn't just dirt; It is a living thing. Microorganisms found in healthy soil help plants absorb nutrients, which will be passed up the food chain to cattle and end up on your dinner plate. In short, healthy soil is the foundation the entire food system relies on.
